Marialexandra Garcia (B.F.A., fashion, 1997) wanted to be a fashion designer the moment she knew it could be a career. Post-graduation, her namesake line Marialexandra was sold throughout the U.S. in high-end boutiques and department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2006, she received the Perrier Bubbling Under Fashion Designer of the Year award followed by the Vanidades Award of the Year for the Arts. In 2009, SCAD awarded her with the Distinguished Alumna Award. When the financial crisis hit, she began to listen more closely to customers, which led to the launch of Outplay, a swimwear and sportswear company that offers androgynous clothing for anyone.
The Business of Creatives is a series of professional development presentations and conversations with SCAD alumni entrepreneurs to promote alumni-owned businesses and give these seasoned alumni entrepreneurs the opportunity to share their insights and best practices with current students and fellow alumni. All graduates of the Savannah College of Art and Design are members of the SCAD Alumni Society. Stay connected, get involved, and enjoy the benefits, resources, and opportunities available.
