“What to Do When the Gumbo Hits the Hot Pot”: How to Respond to the Media in a Breaking News or Crisis Situation

From traditional news conferences to tweets, “What to Do When the Gumbo Hits the Hot Pot” will provide comprehensive instruction on how to respond to media in a breaking news or crisis situation. This interactive seminar, which is appropriate for public relations professionals at all career levels, will teach participants how to craft key messages, provide resources to handle difficult situations in an ever-changing digital age, and evaluate timely and relevant examples of crisis communications.

In this custom-tailored workshop, each participant will:

  • Learn how to craft effective communications tools that focus on maximum disclosure and minimum delay.
  • Explore the principles of SAPP: security, accuracy, propriety, and policy
  • Identify a spokesperson and create a crisis center
  • Learn how to use traditional and social media, as well as your own communications platforms, to effectively communicate with all of your publics

Dr. Joseph V. Trahan, III, APR, Fellow PRSA has more than 33 years of public relations/affairs experience in governmental, association, and educational and non-profit public relations. Since 1998, he has trained more than 3,500 people yearly in media relations throughout almost all of the United States. England, Norway, France, Belgium, Paraguay, Mexico and the Netherlands.

Dr. Trahan graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Military History. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Relations from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising from The University of Southern Mississippi.

An accredited member of Public Relations Society of America, Dr. Trahan is a former member of the National PRSA Board of Directors and National PRSSA Faculty Advisor.
