MODA | Wine & Design: Love, Justice, and Typography

January 16 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$20

Join us for an inspiring evening at MODA! We’ll begin with a guided tour of CHARACTERS: Type in Action, where you’ll discover how typography—letters, fonts, and design—has been used to tell powerful stories and drive social change.

After the tour, enjoy a glass of wine as we gather for a meaningful conversation with Dr. Susana Morris, a Georgia Tech scholar and co-founder of the Crunk Feminist Collective. Inspired by the words of bell hooks, “There can be no love without justice,” Dr. Morris will guide us in exploring the idea that love is a powerful design tool—one that can help us create a fairer, more equitable world.

Whether you’re a design enthusiast, a justice advocate, or simply curious about the connections between love, design, and justice, this event is for you. Come connect with others, get inspired, and leave with new ideas about how love and design can make a difference.

About Susana M. Morris, Ph.D.

Susana Morris is an associate professor at Georgia Tech and co-founder of the feminist blog The Crunk Feminist Collective, where she writes about topics like body positivity, pop culture, race, and self-care. She’s the author of Close Kin and Distant Relatives and co-editor of The Crunk Feminist Collection and Sycorax’s Daughters, a horror anthology written by Black women. Susana also co-edits the New Suns book series, which explores race, gender, and sexuality in speculative fiction.

Her writing has appeared in Cosmopolitan.com, Ebony.com, Longreads, and more. She’s been featured in Essence and Colorlines and has appeared on NPR and HuffPost Live. Susana is currently working on two new books: one about Black women vampires and Afrofuturism, and another—a collection of essays—about her experiences as a first-generation American.

About CHARACTERS: Type in Action

Typography has long been a powerful force in the fight for freedom.

From Martin Luther Jr. to Eva Perón, Stacey Abrams to Harriet Tubman, CHARACTERS: Type in Action delves into the impact of typography on social justice, examining its history and its role in today’s movements. This exhibition showcases typefaces created by Tré Seals, a Black designer from Washington, D.C., and founder of Vocal Type, whose work captures the spirit of these movements. These typefaces remind us that a just and equitable world embraces diverse voices in our daily lives.

Through the stories of these historical figures, CHARACTERS: Type in Action reveals how typography can be wielded as a tool for both oppression and liberation, encouraging us to consider our own role in the ongoing struggle for justice.
