In 2017, as our country began building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, designer Jayna Zweiman started The Welcome Blanket Project as a way of countering this act of exclusion. She invited individuals across the nation to handcraft blankets as “warm welcome” gifts for newly arrived immigrants and refugees and send them to host institutions where they are cataloged, photographed, displayed, and then given to our newest neighbors.
MODA has participated in The Welcome Blanket twice in the past years and has received and distributed over 1,500 blankets. Join us for a virtual conversation with Jayna, as we learn what inspired her to create the project, how it’s been received across the country, what she hopes to achieve, and how we can all get involved.
