Join MODA’s Young Professionals Members and Who Gives A Crap for a virtual conversation about art, design, and toilet paper moderated by Gene Kansas, cultural developer, design aficionado, business guru, founder and CEO of Gene Kansas | Real Estate, and host of Sidewalk Radio!
Toilet paper company Who Gives a Crap came into being in 2012 when its founders learned that 2.4 billion people don’t have access to a toilet (now 2 billion – yay for progress!). That’s roughly 40% of the global population, which means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrheal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. They thought that was pretty crap. So in July 2012, Simon Griffiths, Jehan Ratnatunga, and Danny Alexander launched Who Gives A Crap with a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo.
Who Gives a Crap recently launched “Where’s the Loo?,” a special edition of toilet paper with wrappers created by Australian illustrator Owen Lindsay. Each roll is wrapped in an illustrated puzzle to ponder while you poo. From the Arctic to the Big Apple, they’ve hidden a new toilet (and so much more) on each wrapper. From New York City to the Arctic Circle, under the sea to outer space, each wrapper is full of easter eggs, location-specific jokes and of course, the hidden loo. Ranging in varying levels of difficulty, each search puzzle is sure to entertain no matter how long you’re on the toilet.
In this conversation, Gene will be talking with graphic designer Gretchen Schwartz and illustrator Owen Lindsay to learn how Where’s the Loo came into being — from the brief given to Owen, through his early sketches, to final production. Whether you’re wondering how art gets on products or whether toilet paper can be fun AND good for the world, this is the conversation for you!
