MODA | Catalyst: Design Social Change

What motivates you as a changemaker? What forces prevent you (and others) from thriving? In other words . . . who are you?

These are the most essential questions to ask when it comes to creating social change, and that’s exactly what we’re inviting you to do!

At the next session of Catalyst, a series for those who are passionate about design and the ways in which it can change their lives, we’ll be diving into Design Social Change: Take Action, Work Toward Equity, and Challenge the Status Quo, a Stanford d.school guide, and we want you to join us!

Facilitated by Kevin Day, Impact Design Lab Coordinator at the Mount Vernon School, and co-presented with Iz Holcomb, Programming Co-Chair, AIGA Atlanta the meet-up will include:

  • An introduction to the book Design Social Change
  • A discussion of the main ideas in Design Social Change (reading the book in advance isn’t necessary)
  • Insight from those who have leveraged the book’s contents to achieve positive changes in their lives and careers

About Design Social Change

Through Design Social Change, designer and educator Lesley-Ann Noel shares the essential design strategies for creating lasting impact. This work starts with knowing yourself and builds outward into making change in your community and the larger world.

In this book, the strategies for change are based on equity and fairness, understanding your own role, and seeking justice. These strategies demonstrate how to use anger, joy, and empathy as inspiration and to understand what people need to thrive. These new approaches can inspire change using the tools of design, helping you craft changes that are relevant to you and move the impact of your work toward a more just and equitable future.

The cost to attend this event is $23.

  • This fee includes a copy of Design Social Change, valued at $15.99.
  • Additional copies of the book will be available in MODA Design Shop.

About Co-Presenters

Kevin Day is the Impact Design Lab Coordinator at the Mount Vernon School. His course invites eighth graders to learn and lean into design thinking as a stance of generous curiosity, empathy-fueled problem-finding and problem-solving, and a purpose-full path by which learners of any age might participate in designing a better world. He is leaning into his eighteenth year of classroom teaching this year; his vocational journey has also wound through cross country and track coaching and hospital chaplaincy. When the school day ends, he fights traffic to get home to Duluth, GA, where he and his wife (Katie) do their best to keep up with their beloved son (Elijah, 7). Kevin loves running, aspires to write more, and means to live authentically – and today – towards the intersection of design thinking, spiritual practice, and creative courage.  

Iz Holcomb is the Director of Design at Banyan Communications, a creative consultancy in Atlanta, GA that serves federal, state, and non-profit clients to exclusively create change for good. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of roles: from in-house design specialist, to agency art director, to branding studio designer, to UX strategist, to copywriter, to university design and coding professor (not necessarily in that order). She leads a double-digit and growing team of talented designers, art directors, and motion designers leading creative communications initiatives with clients such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Public Health Association. Iz holds a bachelor’s in Advertising and a master’s in Integrated Marketing Communication from Florida State University. By connecting with wonderful creatives through AIGA’s Tallahassee chapter, she discovered that using design to make positive change in the world was exactly what she wanted to spend her career doing. When her slack light is off, you can find her eating Jeni’s ice cream.

The cost to attend this event is $23. Each participant will receive a copy of Design Social Change, valued at $15.

Cancellation Policy

MODA reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment requirements are not met, but don’t worry: should MODA have to cancel, we will gladly issue a full refund to all registrants. If you need to cancel your plans for any reason, we kindly request that you notify us at least 7 days prior to the event start. By doing so, we can process a refund for the ticket cost (minus a small $10 processing fee per class). Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made less than 7 days before an event.‌

 

Accessibility

Designers with different styles of learning or special needs are welcome in MODA’s public programs. We will be able to most effectively help everyone learn and enjoy this experience if we know about those needs in advance of the event.
